Distribution and logistics
A family-owned distributor was paying for overtime every night and still missing morning deliveries. A review of the night shift found the time it was losing and won it back.

Kettle River Distribution delivers building supplies to lumberyards and contractor supply houses across the Midwest. Most orders arrive in the afternoon and leave before six the next morning.
The night shift lost its first two hours waiting for picking lists that were printed in batches. Loading followed the order the lists came out, not the order the trucks left.
Picking lists now go out as orders arrive, and trucks are loaded in departure order. The shift lead runs a ten-minute review each morning with the dispatch office.
On-time morning deliveries rose from 86% to 98%, and overtime fell by more than a fifth.
